The World Health Organisation (WHO) defines health as a state of complete physical, mental, and social well-being. In this sense, the cities and buildings we live in play a fundamental role since, through their design, we can encourage healthy lifestyles and mobility, foster social links, and lay the foundations for positive or negative chemical and physical conditions for our health.
Air pollution is undoubtedly one of the most relevant global health risks we face as a society, but pollution is not only on the street.
It is estimated that the inside of buildings is generally 2 to 5 times more polluted than the outside, mainly due to toxic emissions from construction materials, finishes, and furniture, lack of ventilation, maintenance issues, and user habits.
If you wish to learn from experts in architecture, design, and hospital care what to consider when designing interior spaces so that they act as catalysts of both physical and mental health, sign up for this session.
Because, apart from inhabiting spaces, we also breathe them.
Guests María José Araya León Architect and Ph.D. in Architecture, academic and researcher at Elisava, Barcelona School of Design and Engineering, Universitat de Vic - Universitat Central de Catalunya. Her field of research focuses on the psychological, cognitive, and biological foundations of the architectural experience, aiming to contribute to the well-being of humans by encoding their link with the built environment based on evidence-based design, a systemic view, ergonomics, and the principles of neuroarchitecture. She has collaborated with several public and private research projects, participating in various international congresses and publishing valuable scientific papers.
She is a researcher at the Decoding Well-Being line of Elisava Research, Co-Director of the Master's degree in Design for One Health, and an academic at that same institution. At the same time, she works as an architect at maLeon Arquitectura, Diseño e Investigación, and is a collaborating architect at TEMA Studio. María holds a Ph.D. in Architecture from UIC + Elisava (2021), a Master's Degree in Design from the Politecnico di Milano (2012), a degree in Architecture from the University of Santiago de Chile (2006), and an Ergonomics degree from the same institution. She also has a long academic experience in Chilean Universities, mainly at the University of Santiago de Chile, and collaborations as an architect in Chile, Italy, and Spain.
Elena Codina Sampera Pediatrician (University of Barcelona) with experience in Primary Care, specialising in Pediatric Nephrology (Master's Degree in Pediatric Nephrology from the University of Barcelona). Assistant physician at the Hospital Sant Joan de Déu (HSJD) since 2016. Coordinator of the Pediatric Hemodialysis Unit and responsible for the Nephrourological Malformations, Arterial Hypertension, and Cardiovascular Risk departments.
She has led the Maternal and Child Environmental Health Unit of the Pediatrics Service of the HSJD since February 2022. She is currently collaborating on different projects and studies with the Barcelona Global Health Institute (ISGlobal) in maternal and child environmental health. Member of the Environmental Health Work Group of the Catalan Pediatrics Society and the Environmental Health Committee of the Spanish Pediatrics Association.
Anna del Corral She leads the Decoding Wellbeing research group at Elisava Research. Her field of research is the design methodologies that allow us to devise healthy spaces, products, and services for well-being and care from a global perspective. This involves considering human well-being in all its facets, integrating the unavoidable objectives of respect, conservation, and recovery of the environment and all its living systems.
This perspective has been developed and integrated into both academic and research projects with companies and institutions such as Sant Joan de Déu, VIBIA, SEAT, EDAG Group, Quadpack, or AMBIT. Anna holds a Ph.D. in Computer Science from the Polytechnic University of Catalonia and a degree in Industrial Design from Elisava. Before joining Elisava, she was a researcher and lecturer at the Dept. of Computer Architecture of the Polytechnic University of Catalonia for fourteen years and has worked in the private sector as an industrial designer.
Marc Conangla Product designer with a multidisciplinary approach between physical and digital design. He has worked for many years developing new experiences and products for global brands. In recent years he has focused on broadening his vision as a designer with a dimension that contemplates the fundamental needs of human beings and society.
He currently works at Domestic Data Streamers, a studio that creates emotional connections between data and people, leading innovation projects and generating new lines of business. He is co-founder of 16 Times, a DDS spin-off with the mission to design tools to analyse, visualise and improve indoor air quality and the impact it has on our health.
