Design for Interspecies Cohabitation
The global ecosystem is increasingly out of balance as a result of the accumulation of human activities over many years. In our exploration of ways to recover this balance, numerous questions arise about how to design for a world that is shifting from an anthropocentric approach to one of interdependence between humans and nature. More and more we are realizing that we have a great deal to learn from the other species who share our planet as we imagine a future based on cohabitation and cooperation.
TOPIC OF THE MONTHSpaces for Reflection
In our complex and highly charged world, how do we design spaces that inspire calm and contemplation? Spaces where people can gather their thoughts and refocus are increasingly important in response to the collective need to deal with the stresses and demands of contemporary life. Whether they are located in the middle of the city or in suburban or rural areas, these places invite introspection as well as encounters with other people and with nature to allow for transformative experiences that can enrich our everyday lives.
TOPIC OF THE MONTHNew Ways of Working
Today we find ourselves questioning many of our previous assumptions about where, when and how we work. Although workplaces have always been influenced by economic, social and cultural factors, the rapid developments in technology and the recent experiences of the pandemic have provoked a profound exploration of how their design must adapt to the new concepts that are evolving, which encourage collaboration, flexibility and well-being. As we move from the idea of traditional offices and rigid schedules, what will be the impact on how our homes, cities and communities are organized? How will the new technologies affect the design and construction processes?
TOPIC OF THE MONTHReconnecting with Nature
Human evolution is intrinsically tied to our changing connection to the natural world. As we moved from the agricultural age through the various stages of the industrial and now digital revolutions, humans have sought to domesticate and eventually to dominate the environment, producing a radical change in the way we live and consume. Now we realize the urgent need to regenerate the balance between humans, animals and nature, creating a more healthy environment for all. As we come full circle in these relationships, we are beginning to understand the value of Indigenous and traditional strategies, which combined with new technologies can lead us toward the design of a more green and vibrant future.
