Fit to Sports Sports are some of the most widespread human activities. Traditionally, sporting events have been about competition and spectacle, with sports venues as key elements that construct the city. However, they are also a means of socialization and a way to learn about teamwork. Sports cultivate a sense of collective identity and encourage personal perseverance, and they are about the celebration of great events such as the Olympics as well as each athlete’s personal best. Increasingly we are exploring how sports contribute to a new focus on healthy lifestyles and the potential of sports venues—with a variety of functions and scales—to be integral parts of both urban and natural landscapes.
